This is not a beginner’s camera. If you don’t understand the difference between a phone camera and a mirrorless or a DLSR camera, don’t buy it unless you are willing to invest time to learn it. I have always said, a better camera does not guarantee you’ll get better photos if you don’t know how to use it. This type of camera are not simple point and shoot cameras, they can be, but they really aren’t. The main reason to buy a camera like this is to capture images that are not possible with a phone or a basic point-and-shoot camera. The difference is that phones and point-and-shoot cameras don’t require that you know where your focus is, you simply shoot and everything in front of you is in focus all the way to infinity. With cameras like this, and some premium point-and-shoot cameras with large sensors, you need to know what you want in focus, and usually, everything else will likely be out of focus, unless you specifically set the camera to get more in focus by closing the aperture.

I had to say that. Now to the actual review.

    The good:

    1. Touch menus. Yes! IT WAS ABOUT TIME.
    2. Vari-angle screen. I did not know I was missing it because I never had one. No camera should be made without one.
    3. Better menu organization – Still expansive but better organized.
    4. On screen quick menu during operation is much welcomed. It makes changing basic settings a breeze not having to dig through the menu.
    5. Front dial. Yes! Now I can quickly change aperture and shutter speed using the front and back dial and still have the back wheel for additional quick adjustments during shutting. Nice.
    6. IBIS, yeah baby. Not the best but better than nothing. I can not use my non stabilized lenses when I normally wouldn’t.
    7. Larger battery. Nice to have. I use a dummy battery for recording long performances but I probably wont’ need one for this camera; 2 or 3 batteries should suffice.
    8. Less rolling shutter effect – Main reason for me to get this camera. Now I’ll wait till Sony puts the global shutter on an aps-c body and hope it is prices similarly to this one.
    9. Emphasized REC Display – shows a red frame around the screen to show that you are recording. Needs to be configured in the options.
    10. Speedy focus system. It was already good but now it is better.
    11. More video recording options with some downsides.

    The bad.
    1. It overheats quickly when shooting video in 4:2:2, 10-bit. I shoot 4K 4:2:0 in 8-bit to avoid overheating.
    2. It overheats even faster when using external monitor or external charger.
    3. Ergonomics aren’t that good. I don’t like sharper edges on the thumb rest because I have small hands and that is where my palm rests, but I will probably get used to it.
    4. Was it really necessary to remove the flash? I use external flash but it is nice to have the built in one in a pinch.
    6. This has nothing to do with the camera. RAW files not supported by most applications yet.
    7. This is my problem. The video editor I use does not support 4:2:2 nor 10-Bit video files. I guess it is time to upgrade programs.
    8. It would be nice to have a tally light in the front and back when recording.
    9. Why can’t I customize the on-screen menus? Come on Sony, you almost had it.

So many are looking at pictures taken and than trying to find the shutter count.
So almost 90% will give you 600 plus shutter count simply because the websites are not updated to this model yet.
Only site which gives exact count is — search for SONY Alpha shutter counter. —
The camera came with latest version of firmware preinstalled so i guess it is from latest batch.
The shutter count was 1 which i clicked it obviously.

The camera has no faults, worked with newer flash perfectly, recording 4k 60p videos at 100mbps without any issue on V30 extreme card.
Which was a surprise, so didn’t bother to buy v60 or v90 card.

I received the camera with plastic cover opened and and tape on it, I immediately returned it

I bought this item twice and returned twice because the battery would not charge through the camera. One of the key reasons I got this camera was for its newer technology and the fact that I wouldn’t necessarily need a battery recharger bought separately. This product is supposed to recharge the battery while in the camera. I have spoken with 4 different Sony people that have said that the two cameras I have are faulty itself and not the issue of the battery. I am disappointed because I never cared for Amazon cause I always have a bad experience with them and thought that this would be a safe buy. I am buying directly from Sony for this product because at least they CARE. Since I bought this through their Amazon store, its not a direct link to Sony which means my only options are to return and not be compensated (asking for free quick shipping only!).

My a6700 ended up overheating on me during a wedding ceremony (suuuper lame). I was shooting 4K 60p in more or less short clips at a time, on a gimbal the entire time, it was a hot day (like 88F), and it only lasted for about 50min until the heat warning sign came on and 10 sec later, it shut off.

But, to my fault, I had the brightness set to sunny weather so I’m sure that was a huge factor, and I could’ve shut the camera off when not recording rather than leaving it on the whole time.

In my experience it performed decent considering I pushed it to its max, I just now know I can’t rely on it in a situation like that. Other than that I love the camera, I get pro level quality video with all the latest and greatest features Sony has to offer.

As for the overheating, I am hardly ever in a scenario where I shoot 4K 60p for an hour in blazing heat. That, is a very niche job which the fx30 is better suited for. For everything else that I will do: photography, YouTube, short films, family videos, and personal projects, this camera will be more than enough for YEARS to come. It’s amazing and a workhorse, and it’s worth it.

And fyi I had heating temp set to high and the flip screen open. Also, I hear that the firmware update helps with heat management but I could be wrong, I updated it after the fact.

Cumple con todas las necesidades que requiero.

I previously had a ~10 year old Canon Rebel model, I don’t remember exactly which, I’ve since sold it. I certainly knew camera technology had improved in the last 10 years, but this is insane. Everything about this camera is leaps and bounds better than my previous, and it makes getting good shots almost too easy. One of the first things I did with it was photograph a wedding, and almost every photo came out perfectly stable and in-focus. I purchased this with the 18-135 kit lens, which I HIGHLY recommend. I know kit lenses are generally not great, but this one is a major exception. Unless you’re buying this unit for the body itself and already have an assortment of lenses, the 18-135 is basically magic for a kit zoom lens, as far as I’m concerned. I also supplemented it with a Sigma 30mm F1.4 for nice portrait shots, which equally did a lovely job. I did notice the kit lens focused slightly faster, but I don’t know if that’s the lens or the camera responsible for that.

  9. Yaccenia

Amazing quality and such a good feeling with this camera, but keep in mind that this is NOT a camera for streaming because the battery over heats and after like 1.5 or 2 hours it turns off.
