Nikon has finally done it! I tried the D7000 and made numerous comparisons with other camera brands, but for the money and name, you can’t go wrong with the D7100. The added “reach” of the additional crop factor (1:3), and the huge new (3.2 in.) display screen give this entry an extra boost above the competition. Added to this the 14 bit RAW file at 24.1 MP and you’ve got a winner for DX shooting that really deserves to be called “Nikon’s DX Flagship” in this format; a post-processing Lightroom dream to work with.
Right out of the box, Nikon presents itself with distinction; this thing exudes quality and comfort. Factory defaults were right on and presented great pictures instantly. The fast 51 point auto-focusing system with the 15 cross-types really do the job and I was amazed at the speed, even when using a slow and heavy Nikkor 55-300mm lens- see flower shots in customer images.
I have been waiting for this model even before it was announced; almost three years now and I’m not disappointed. It would seem that the earlier problems with front/back focusing in some D7000’s have been addressed and corrected with this one, as I see very few problems of this sort. I find it amusing that some users forget to adjust the diopter in the viewfinder to their own specific eye needs; each person is slightly different. That should be emphasized in the opening instructions in capital and bold letters, so that everyone gets it “right.” Without that, manual focusing will be to all practical purposes impossible.
When you get your new camera delivered, there are some important steps to take to insure everything goes the way it should.
Carefully unpack your shipment box, taking care to hang onto the original packaging materials in case you are returning it.
Charge battery to full charge. Don’t fall for the temptation to fiddle with the settings on the camera with a partially charged battery.
CHECK VIEWFINDER DIOPTER with lens attached to correct for your shooting eye. Then double check its accuracy.
When SD cards are inserted, format them in the camera to acclimate them to the file system. Never format any camera card in your computer. In fact, when copying from card, don’t cut and paste any image from the card, just copy and paste. Don’t let the computer treat the card as an external hard drive and modify it, use importing software or simply copy and paste files into your picture directory.
Start at factory (out-of the box) settings and take some shots. Remember any modifications can be undone by simple formatting the camera back to factory default by pressing and holding the two green buttons on the outside of the camera for two seconds.
And lastly, remember that this is a virtual visual computer with a huge array of functions and capabilities that will take some time to understand and learn. Don’t get frustrated if your pictures aren’t what you would like. Take your time and ask questions. A great site on the web is The Ugly Hedgehog.com
Have fun and enjoy this great hobby called photography.

Great camera. This is step up for me from a Nikon D3200. There are just too many features to list but short of full frame cameras this is as good as it gets in DX format IMHO..
Well built and easy to use controls.
Since I already have a collection of Nikon lenses I just needed the body.
The one con… No manual !! This is kinda a pain to me considering the setup menu in camera has 50 pages !. ONLY reason for the 4 stars.
EDIT
After using it and getting some books on the D7100, I love it even more now.

I’ve been a Nikon D-SLR owner for the last 6 years and love their cameras and lenses (For the record I’ve used Canon, Nikon and Sony D-SLRs and many other cameras in a professional capacity). The D7100 hit the sweet spot for me with regard to my budget and ability to use my existing DX series lenses. Nothing about this camera is feels cheap, it’s as close to using a top-of-the-line full 35mm frame camera as you can get while still using their APS-C size sensor.
I needed to upgrade from my trusty Nikon D90 for two big reasons – interval shooting and full HD video. But as I started to work with this camera I completely fell in love with its rugged construction and power of use. My first impressions were that it was like my D90 had taken performance enhancing drugs. All of the wariness I’d felt upgrading from such a reliable camera disappeared with my first sessions shooting image and video.
The only thing that I wish came with it was a mini HDMI to HDMI adapter cable so that I could hook it up to a TV right off the bat, but those are fairly inexpensive to add on. Also, I had to replace my SD cards with newer, higher capacity, higher speed media because my older media filled up much more quickly and lagged behind the camera in how quickly it could capture images. Overall I am extremely pleased with this camera and can hardly wait to keep using it.

I think it’s the best thing you can get for under $2000 and have room for lenses. Solid feature set, easy to learn and use, very flexible menu systems for a ton of customizations, and all of the buttons and switches are in comfortable spots for my quick adjustment needs.
While for me, this is the best prosumer choice, I can’t stop reading reviews from pros and having conversations with folks in the industry who want to get one for their high-end work.
Sure it’s a cropped lens, but I’m not doing any tourist photography that’ll suffer. I paired it with a 35 mm DX Nikkor prime 1.8 along with a Tamron 10-24 wide-angle and took it to two weddings with a borrowed 85 mm Nikkor prime and SB 600 flash. Amazing photos, easy to learn with, and a very solid camera.
A trip around the world this month found the battery to last at least a couple of days per charge, though I carried a spare and had to change it every 800-1000 photos.
Don’t get the kit lens if you’re going to use it a lot. Get the body only and you’ll appreciate choosing your own lenses. I learned a lot from the reviews on The Wirecutter.
I love the dual SD slots, and have two 64 GB Sandisk cards in it (now my camera has more hard drive space than my laptop!). I’m using one for RAW and the other for JPG. I understand its overkill, but I’m still learning to compose shots and am trying to get better at weaning myself off of RAW while still learning how to do my editing in post.
I love this body and how it feels in my hands over any Canons I’ve used, and it isn’t as heavy as the really high end cameras that I can’t comfortably take it with me. Fits in a comfortably small Crumpler bag with a few accessories and without breaking my shoulder.
LOVE THIS CAMERA!
