1 review for Ikelite 6148.28 Underwater Housing for Canon PowerShot SX270, SX280

  1. Michael D.

I considered buying the underwater housing made by Canon for this camera and I am glad I did not. This housing does cost an extra $100.00 over the Canon one but the quality of this housing comes through in every area, from the very thick and clear acrylic providing you a clear view of the o-ring to the heavy duty locking latches to close the housing. I used this last weekend and it performed flawlessly, all the buttons and levers are easy to use with the exception of one that is a little difficult to get at. (And I had 3mm gloves on.) I think you will start to run into problems if you want to use the smaller buttons with thick gloves but the major functions you will still be able to use easily.

    Two cautions,
    1) I bought the red Ikelite filter from Amazon for this housing ($79.95), don’t waste your money the SX280HS has a built in red tint underwater mode in the options. I have not tried this underwater mode yet but it looks like it will give enough color correcting so I will not need the red Ikelite filter.
    2) You WILL NOT be able to use the built in flash on your camera for anything other than firing off an attachable strobe, trying to will only ruin any pictures you have tried to take.

There are 2 reasons I gave this a 4 instead of a 5 star rating.

    1) Unless you plan on buying a Ikelite strobe system you will have a hard time mounting the arm to the housing because the mounting bolt holes on the bottom are a very uncommon size thread, and unless you have an adapter plate that comes with the non-Ikelte strobe you won’t be able to mount it cheaply. (I work in a metal fab shop and was able to make my own)

    2) Finding spare O-rings and accessories was not very easy. I spent around 2 hours looking through the Ikelite site (they don’t sell anything just refer you to a nearby dealer) to find out which main body o-ring I needed and what size filter (3.9″ diameter) and then I had to find a dealer that just happened to have the o-ring in stock.

Overall I am very pleased with this housing and other than the couple of thing listed above couldn’t be happier with it.
