By far great beginner drone, great recreational flying and video, but if you want to use it for business or better quality go for the mini 3 pro and above

I have been thinking about purchasing a drone for some time now after my friend got one. I was quite skeptical and I, as a person with purpose, needed this device to be useful. I could understand that it was quite fun, but I needed a use for it to justify the 400 dollar price tag (with tax). After looking at a bunch of different drones in the 100-250 dollar price range, I realized that they were pretty much just for fun and hobbies use.

What I discovered is that, if you are to buy a drone and are on a tight budget, either don’t buy one or buy this one. After using it a few times I can completely recommend this drone from a skeptical point of view.

The main differentiating factor between this drone and other cheaper drones is a few things. Firstly, the quality. DJI makes the best and also most expensive drones in the world. When a high-quality company makes a cheaper product you can be sure that a lot of the technology and know-how from higher-end drones trickles its way down to the cheaper models. This means that the value is very good.

Secondly, these DJI drones are known for their very excellent cameras. With this drone, you are not just getting a camera for which you can see what the drone sees (a necessity for flying) but rather an aerial photography device. The camera is so good you could absolutely think of this drone as a flying camera. Really, I would rate it about as good as a point-and-shoot or an iPhone 12. Another thing to note about the camera is that it is on a gimble, so your photos and videos will be crystal clear and right on point. The colour accuracy from the drone’s camera is phenomenal.

Lastly, with a drone like the DJI MIni SE you are getting a premium product, and you can feel that. The app is amazing. The controls are well thought out. It’s just fantastic.

Long story short, other drones are just not worth your money. More expensive drones like the Mini 2 (while good) are very expensive. These drones won’t break the bank while providing a spurious experience.

    Drone Review, DJI Mini-SE

Price on Amazon on 22-07-23: $299

Best feature: Affordable step-up to the wonderful DJI world
Worst feature: Phone mounting position on the controller

Summary: B+ This is a delightful little drone that’s easy to learn and a joy to fly, at a good price. However, if you can afford the extra cost for the Mini-2, that would be the better choice.

    Some of the highlights:

    1) Before getting this drone, you should confirm that your phone can download and open the DJI Fly app. It’s free, and you can get it at the DJI website.
    2) This drone is perfect for beginners because of its excellent GPS positioning, and other position sensors. That means the drone can hover well. If something strange starts to happen while you’re learning to fly it, just let go of the sticks, and it will hover and wait for you to tell it what to do.
    3) The wind resistance is remarkably good for a drone at this price point
    4) There is no “Fly More” kit for the Mini-SE. However, the Mini-SE batteries are identical to the Mini-2 batteries, and you get the Mini-2 Charging Hub with 2 batteries on Amazon for $150. You won’t need it if you only plan to fly occasionally, but if you expect to fly regularly, you’ll find the charging hub and extra batteries very useful.
    5) Because of the terrible placement of the phone at the bottom of the remote control, you can’t get a decent sunshade for the Mini-SE.
    6) The Mini-SE has great range for a drone at this price point.

Conclusion: Straight out to the box, without any additions, this is the perfect starter drone at this price point. It’s easy to learn, a delight to fly, and affordable. There’s just no better option at the $299 price level. If that’s your budget…go for it!

The Mini 2 SE is the Best value-for-money. Lots of good things to say and a few minor weaknesses … First, the drone is light at 249g and does not require a drone license from the FAA. It is very stable in wind, with an excellent 2.7MP camera and stabilizing gimbal. Phone software works well and notifies you of updates & works with FAA in restricted areas (e.g. near airport). Negatives – realistic battery life of 20-25 min is OK (but good at this price bracket), and the battery drains to 80% after 2 weeks of non-use (I have 3 batteries, so not a 1-off fluke). I have had several accidents with tree branches, and repair is not cheap – get Asurion warranty! Unfortunately, it has no collision avoidance (side/front/back/above). Get propellor guards, but the official DJI black guard are fragile and they break easily. I own the DJI guard, but prefer my alternates amazon.com/dp/B09C1YTB51/

Final opinion is that this DJI Mini 2 SE drone is fantastic bang for the buck, and I strongly recommend it.

As a someone that bought this just to play with drones (after trying some of the cheaper ones) – I love how easy this is to use, and how many resources are available online to learn from simply around this one product.

I would recommend this to anyone looking to get started with drones – don’t waste your time on cheaper knock-off garbage – DJI knows exactly what they are doing!

I’m a total novice, and I heard good things about the DJI brand, and this was available at a good price. You also don’t need a license to fly it either. It was very easy to set up, the app was simple to use and everything is obvious. I was off and flying in no time.

Flying is simple and requires little by the way of experience. There’s no latency between drone movement and what you see on your smartphone screen. Very quiet as well. I absolutely love flying this little thing, it’s a perfect introduction.

A couple of downsides – it doesn’t have its own box, so you’re either going to need to keep in the box it came with or pay out for something. Extra batteries appear to be an issue – I’ve yet to find any, and those that are available are heavier than the one provided which knocks it over that all important 250g. You will need a memory card – you can’t seem to store a flight recording directly onto your phone.

If you’re on the fence about this – just go for it. Well priced, robust, lightweight, easy to use, great for a novice, don’t even think twice!

I bought my first drone so I could get some video from the air when needed. I have been blown away. I did crash it on my 2nd flight, but I was low-level and in between 2 houses (learning experience). I use it almost daily to get sunset shots and videos, as I live in Central Florida and our sunsets are fantastic! Then I used it to check on my house’s and neighbors’ roofs. It stays where you want it and it goes where you guide it. Yes, a spotter is helpful if you are around trees, houses and power lines. You do get focused on the images and can lose sight of safety issues that may crop up.
I would recommend this as a starter/recreational drone. I am sitting video in 2.7K as YouTube will convert down anything larger. The 2.7K video and freeze-frames are very high quality. If you need to make prints, then take the digital snapshot so you get the large digital photo file.
I attached a sample flight from my testing phase. I went up to a construction site, stood in a parking lot and moved it around to see how it reacts. I am confident that it will go where I send it and do what I want with it.
I did send it down a golf course hole and lost sight for a minute, so I hit the return to home button and it came back in sight. Still getting used to all the features and items on the phone app like the map feature and recording modes.
The bottom line, it is a great starter drone with GPS. It is Stable, Goes where you want it, and is a great resource for photographers and videographers. Could probably do more but I don’t want to test the distance and height limits. I had it up about 35 to 40 meters and it got these great sunset shots. BUY IT!
    Revised 3-27-23
Used my drone near an airport. Got a warning that I accept responsibility for flying it in a warning area. I usually don’t take it higher than 115 feet. A medical helicopter flew overhead. They were approx 400 feet AGL and I don’t think I could have reached them. Love this drone and I find ways to use it every week!

  10. Jack Reader

I am surprised how little this drone is promoted. I searched high and low to find a drone that is not overly expensive yet has features like ease of use, ease of learning the features, a user-friendly app, high-quality pictures (why is a gimbal so rarely utilized?), and videos. This drone sets a standard that is almost impossible to match. I own many drones with different price ranges and styles (cinewhoop, tiny whoops, toy drones, Syma, Hubsan, HolyStone, DEERC, etc.), but this drone simply beats them all. It is very easy to fly, quiet, extremely stable even in high winds, the picture quality is amazing, the battery life is incredible, the range is excellent, it is reliable, has a high build quality, it is a constant companion, wherever I go: social events, birthday parties, weddings, BBQ competitions, property surveys, creating Christmas cards, promotions…Most of us have a relatively boring life with a few special events worthy of imaging, so DJI’s top-of-the-line drones appear to be overkill. Regulations of weight and where we can fly are also steadily constricting, so this little drone seems the perfect choice for 99% of customers looking for an aerial photography platform. Can not recommend it enough.
