Obviously there are some glaring downsides with this lens. Lack of manual focus and a fixed, low aperture make it hard to use in some situations. However, you have to take this lens for what it is. It’s so tiny that it makes my a6700 pocketable. Now I can bring my camera with me on outings I otherwise normally wouldn’t have. The sharpness is amazing for this price point, especially on apsc. The 42mm equivalent is nice and my first ever experience with shooting on a prime. It’s a nice focal length for just about most situations. While there is a lot of flaring, I think it adds to the character of the lens. The results are nice enough that I can just share the jpegs straight out of camera and be happy

the auto focus is soooo hard to get focus with. I know it’s suposed to look like a toy polaroid with the crazy flare and what not, but focus is focus. when you it hits, the infocus is sharp. sharper than I thought it’d be, but it does not what catch your talent in the eyes.

I purchased this lens through Viltrox’s crowd funding drive. Viltrox uploaded an update on the crowd funding site a few days after openning, which I quote here:
” IMPORTANT USE REMINDER: Make sure the lens cap is open!
Before using your Viltrox 28mm f/4.5 FE, please remember to press the quickly button to open the lens cap. Be sure to slide the button completely to confirm the lens cap is fully open!
Since Sony cameras automatically adjust the lens during startup, failing to open the lens cap can prevent the autofocus function from activating. Prolonged use without fully opening the lens cap can also damage the lens motor, may cause auto focus function problems
Additionally, once you’ve opened the lens cap and started the camera, please avoid interfering with the lens calibration and autofocus process (you may notice slight back-and-forth movement). Interrupting this can also risk damaging the lens.
Thank you for your attention to these details and for helping ensure the longevity and performance of your lens!”
You can decide for yourself if this is the right lens for you.

What this lens lacks in features it makes up for in fun and simplicity. I wish this lens had a lot of things like a variable aperture, manual focus ring, or better close focusing. However, considering it’s about the size of a body cap I can’t imagine how they would pull any of that off without making it bigger and that would just ruin the experience.
What’s great:
The small size is absolutely amazing. The image quality is great. The autofocus is sufficient, it’s no GM but it works well.
What could be better:
The lens is extremely sensitive to flare and haze, you have to be extremely mindful where your light sources are. The lever to open the lens sticks out a little too much and has gotten snagged when placing in a camera bag and opened the lens.
Overall I would highly recommend the Viltrox 28 f4.5, this thing is coming with me everywhere! There is no reason not to have one of these as a fancy body cap with an autofocus skylight!

What a terrific little lens. It won’t win any prices for the best image quality ever but for what it costs and the utility it provides it is a fantastic deal. Auto focus is reasonable and image quality is satisfactory on my Sony. I also really like the little switch that lets you protect the lens. When you just want a little walk around, I’m thinking this is gonna be great

Perfect for the A7II and APSC cameras

For the price of it I had to buy one, I’ve always loved the 28mm focal length and wanted something small for my A7c. It came nicely boxed and I was impressed by the build quality. I’ve taken a few shots with it so far and I have to say I’m impressed. One shot I took you could count the hairs on the back of my hand. Autofocus isn’t really close and not the fastest but overall I can see this lens spending a lot of time on my camera

I bought this lens based on reviews I read.
I’ve used a few pancake lens in the past, most recently one from 7artisans. While I’ve not been all that impressed with their quality, it was generally acceptable and was a fair trade-off for the smallness of the lens.
That’s pretty much changed with this Viltrox lens. First of all, I did not do any pixel peeping, but I did enlarge every image I took on the computer screen. To my surprise, there was a sharpness I have not seen with previous pancake lenses I’ve shot with. Contrast was good; I didn’t see any color fringing (but other than shooting a few white labels with black lettering, I’d say my test shots didn’t really test for this).
Overall, I’m happy with this lens. Autofocus is quicker than I’d expected. Lens construction is on par with full-sized Viltrox (and other) lenses I have. I expect this lens will see quite a bit of use.

It’s a super portable/pocketable FF auto focus lens for $99, that is a great bargain for what you get. Yes it’s not without its limitations but that’s the fun part. It’s fun to shoot with just what you’re given. If you’re willing to do that, this lens is a great addition to your gear. Only reason I deducted a star is it’s not quite suitable for Slog3 shooting for video. The high ISO requirement makes an ND filter mandatory. Again, gotta figure out a way around this but a filter thread would have been nice. Go get it! At the very least it’s a great lens for travel, if you want to go light.

My thoughts on the lens after having tested on an A7III and A7C:
Overall image quality is rather good, especially in the middle third of the frame, although it’s not terrible at the edges either. It’s quite sharp, actually. And chromatic aberration is remarkably well controlled. Flair, however, is moderately atrocious in certain shooting situations. I think a hood would help with this, but there’s no direct way to mount a hood. Not having the option to manual focus is also kind of an issue for me, but at the price point I’m willing to overlook this.
AF works, but it is rather slow and very antiquated. In AF-S mode, it racks focus all the way to infinity (or back to minimum focus distance) and then tries to find the focal point. It is accurate most of the time (~80%) but does miss here and there. Interestingly, it works far better in my testing in AF-C mode, where it exhibits far less “hunting” and seems to be more responsive and accurate.
For $99 it’s a total banger. Sure, you can’t attach a filter or hood or manually focus, but your get a tiny lens that has AF and surprisingly good sharpness and color rendering. I could totally see this being a good street lens, especially if you post-crop a bit to get a more intimate FOV (although frankly I shoot a lot of street at 28mm).
